About Claralyse

I have a really big family. I have 4 brothers and sisters. They are actually my half brothers and sisters but we are so close I just like calling them my brothers and sisters. I am also an aunt, because my sister has two kids.

I play both the piano and the trombone. I received an honorable mention at the contemporary festival. In my elementary school last year, I got accepted to play in the honors orchestra 2 years in a row. I also got picked to play at a recital by certificate of merit.

My goal is to keep getting better and better at music (especially theory), and someday I hope to be a composer!

I've always been interested in composing and improvising because my dad is a musician and he writes songs and he's also really good at improvising.

I would like to compose contemporary pieces like the ones by Alexander Tansman (he is one of the composers that I like best). I also might like making Jazz Ensemble pieces, but I know that is much harder because you have to put together many different parts for different instruments along with writing the song.

I play in my school's Wind Ensemble (for trombone). We have a very good band (I think at least), and it sounds very good for 7th and 8th graders. I try to practice at least half an hour a day with my trombone. But to get through everything on piano takes at least an hour. Sometimes I don't get to everything each day.

I love playing piano because it is a time when I can forget about homework and school and everything and just play. I like the challenges of difficult rythyms and keeping the beat steady. I also like fooling around with some of the pieces and making up some of my own little phrases. My little phrases aren't the best, but I know I can get better.

Favorite Songs to Play

I don't really have a favorite piece or composer. I mostly play contemporary pieces when it comes to playing piano, and I like jazz when I play trombone. Usually I get really into whatever piece I'm learning at the time, so I never have a true favorite.

Hobbies

I swim on a swim team after school monday-thursday, which is fun. I also like photograhpy, and I'm pretty good at it.

Question of the Month

What are your most creative and successful practice strategies?

Taking a piece slowly.

I know that isn't very creative but it's the most successful. Using the metronome helps a lot too.

I practice difficult phrases separately.
